About a teenage girl who falls in love with a vampire, 'Twilight' made me laugh... at first. But then I gave the book a chance and realized it was not as silly as it seemed, but irresistibly intriguing. From the start, Bella is about to die. The first two pages of the book profess this, and yet the description of the moments before her death is a vague, nebulous ordeal. Plunging the reader into the time in Bella's life when she decides to move to the city of Forks, 'Twilight' manages to compel the reader further. On her first day of school, a strange boy gives her a wicked, nefarious look and she cannot imagine why he did it or why he is insanely beautiful...
'Twilight' by Stephenie Meyer starts out wonderfully, but as the writing continues, I found it became, well, silly. I was still addicted to the book, but in the middle, it lost it's seriousness/realistic portrayal of teens. Not to mention, the characters act corny. There is nothing more annoying than in YA novels when all the teenagers wink and throw back their head in laughter after every little joke that's not remotely funny and say those cutesy little phrases. Goodness, I know it's hard for adults to relate to the 'modern lingo' of today's teens, but honestly, how many people wink? This has always been a problem I've had... I never see teenagers wink! Why do adult authors seem to think we wink every other minute? Guess what? We don't!! Agh!!!
Back to the book... the beginning is so delicious and the plot strangely addicting that I must recommend it.

I actually read this recently... I never read "teen" books because of most of the reasons you said, Natalie: corny, unrealistic, and really I find most of them completely unattracting. Writers also think that the only things teens are attracted to is fashion, drama, and horrible juicy romance. they are very wrong!
Anyway, I guiltily enjoyed this book. As sappy and sometimes unconvincing as it was, I also literally could not put it down after I got past the first 10 or so pages. Though I agree with everything you said, Natalie, I wouldn't go so far as to recommend it unless you really need an entertaining, stress-free easy read...

Apparently these books have been a big success-- especially with the release of 'Eclipse.'
