'Sabriel' starts off with the reader meeting the titular character, a young girl called Sabriel. Her father is then killed and she is determined to find out what happened to him. In the process, she meets a handsome, illigitimate prince called Touchtone, and becomes aquainted with a snarky cat called Mogget.
'Sabriel' is, first and foremost, a great fantasy read. With a rather original plot, innovative ideas (like the bells that are used to do magic), and a good sprinkling of humour, it is a light read with a touch of sweetness and romance - and a heady amount of action!
'Lirael' - the second book focuses on Lirael, a shy, outcast girl living amongst the Clayr, but not feeling like one of them. She is angry, frustrated, and even thinks of commiting suicide. Howerver, she does not, and finds herself going on a mission for the Clayr. Apparently, something has been going on, and the Calyr cannot See what it is. She meets Sam, Sabriel's and Touchstone's son, a prince who has no desire to follow in his mother's footsteps. He runs away to save his friend, and meets Lirael - and neither know that they are closely related. They become close friends, and work together to defeat the forces of evil.
The second book is a great sequel, fuller and more detailed, but with a slightly slow beginning. I loved the relationships in it - the lvoe between Sabriel and Touchtone, the friendship between Lirael and Sam. I could totally ralte to Lirael - and Sam's goody-two-shoes sister is just hilarious.
'Abhorsen' - Lirael becomes an Abhorsen-In-Training - the person who will fight the dead when Sabriel dies. They, together with Touchstone and Sam, continue to fight against the dead.
The darkest of the books, but wraps everything nicely.
Overall, this is Garth Nix in his best. He tosses you into the midst of his fast-paced action mercilessly. He makes you laugh (via the witty and sarcastic Mogget, most of the times). Sure, this is no intellectual reading that will stay with you forever. It will not change your life. But darn is it good fun!!!
