I recently finished this book; I thought I would like it since it is known for being greatly influenced by Jane Eyre, which is another good book. And yes, I did like it. It is a famous Hitchthingy movie, but the book really isn't that scary at all. There is, however, a nice, big plot twist.
Beginning with the main character (Mrs. de Winter)having a dream about her old house (Manderley), the book then goes on to tell the story of how the woman and house are united and linked. Mrs. de Winter is, as a child, in Monte Carlo with a woman from whom she receives money for spending time with her. She is terribly diffident, and is lucky to meet Mr. de Winter whose wife Rebecca recently died. The two fall in love and marry, but Rebecca 'haunts' them...
